At Southway Junior School we pride ourselves on our understanding of the importance of diversity and allowing children to explore and respect other cultures – including, but not limited to, learning another language. We believe that learning French broadens opportunities and improves awareness of different countries around the world, which in turn teaches respect and kindness towards others. Additionally, teamwork skills will be enhanced through dialogue and group activities to support vocabulary development.
During the four years at Southway Junior School, all pupils will develop their confidence and resilience in listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in French so that they are able to:
- Understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources.
- Build resilience and speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation.
- Write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt.
Southway Junior School follows a Languages scheme of work offered by Rigolo which cultivates and progresses children’s language learning through motivating stories, interactive games and engaging songs, in alignment with the school’s ‘iii’ approach. The format of lessons and approach to learning a language will reflect and develop our school values of resilience, teamwork, independence and respect.
These lessons support the requirements of the National Curriculum in England for Languages. Lessons are designed to provide children with opportunities for listening, speaking, reading and writing with a focus on building key vocabulary and phrases around familiar everyday situations.
Rigolo ensures that pupils are exposed to a native speaker audio, which develops the accuracy of each child’s pronunciation. To extend this further, we provide all children at Southway with the opportunity to experience real world conversations amongst French speaking individuals with a Year 6 residential to France. This allows pupils to work towards the acquisition of new vocabulary being used in meaningful and relevant contexts.
